If you’ve ever considered buying, selling, or taking a loan on a diamond, you’ve likely heard about the 4Cs: Cut, Clarity, Color, and Carat. These four factors are the global standard used to assess a diamond’s quality – and ultimately, its value.
At Houston Jewelry & Loan, we work with diamonds every day — buying them, appraising them, and offering loans against them. We know that the more you understand about diamond quality, the more empowered you’ll be when making decisions about your jewelry. Whether you’re considering selling an old diamond ring, taking a loan against a loose diamond, or buying your next investment piece, here’s what you need to know about the 4Cs.
Cut: The Sparkle Factor
Cut is often considered the most important of the 4Cs because it has the greatest influence on how a diamond sparkles. It doesn’t refer to the shape (such as round, oval, or princess cut), but rather how well the diamond’s facets are cut and proportioned.
A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, giving it that unmistakable brilliance and fire. A poorly cut diamond, no matter how large or clear, will appear dull or lifeless.
When evaluating diamonds, we look for excellent or very good cut grades, as these typically provide the best balance of beauty and value. The precision of a diamond’s cut can sometimes make a smaller stone appear more vibrant than a larger but poorly cut one.
Clarity: A Window Into the Diamond
Clarity measures how free a diamond is from internal inclusions (natural imperfections) or external blemishes. Most diamonds contain some level of these imperfections – it’s incredibly rare to find one that is truly flawless.
Clarity is graded on a scale from Flawless (FL) to Included (I1, I2, I3). For many buyers and sellers, diamonds graded from Very Slightly Included (VS) to Slightly Included (SI) offer a great balance – the inclusions are difficult to see with the naked eye but the price is much more approachable than a flawless stone.
At Houston Jewelry & Loan, our experts carefully inspect each diamond under magnification to accurately assess clarity, ensuring you get a true understanding of your diamond’s quality.
Color: The Whiter, The Brighter
In white diamonds, color actually refers to the absence of color. The most desirable white diamonds are completely colorless, graded from D (colorless) down to Z (light yellow or brown tint).
While completely colorless diamonds are rare and command premium prices, many diamonds in the near-colorless range (G–J) still appear white to the untrained eye, especially once set in jewelry.
If you’re selling a diamond or seeking a loan against it, the color grade will significantly influence its value. Our team is highly trained in accurate color grading to ensure you get a fair appraisal.
Carat Weight: Size Matters (But It’s Not Everything)
Carat weight refers to a diamond’s physical weight. Naturally, all else being equal, larger diamonds are rarer and therefore more valuable.
However, two diamonds of equal carat weight can vary dramatically in value based on their cut, clarity, and color. For example, a well-cut 1-carat diamond with excellent clarity and color will be worth far more than a poorly cut 1-carat diamond with visible inclusions.
When you visit Houston Jewelry & Loan, we take all four Cs into account – not just size – to give you a fair and accurate offer on your diamond.
